The economic impact of the inland water fisheries/aquaculture industry: The case of the eel industry in Japan

Abstract

Despite the decline in freshwater eel farming, eels remain an important food resource in Japan. This study analyses economic impacts of inland water fisheries and inland aquaculture industry as the eel industry using hypothetical extraction method. As a result, if inland water fisheries were eliminated, direct economic value would be US$202 million. In the case of the inland water aquaculture industry, direct economic value was US$777 million. Additionally, indirect economic effects have affected other related industries. Thus the policies to protect eels and promote the development of full life‐cycle aquaculture are needed to sustain the eel industry and related industries. A pesar del declive de la cría de anguilas de agua dulce, éstas siguen siendo un importante recurso alimentario en el Japón. En este estudio se analizan las repercusiones económicas de la pesca en aguas del interior del país y de la industria de la acuicultura como la de la anguila, utilizando un método de extracción hipotético. Como resultado, si se eliminase la pesca en aguas de interior, el valor económico directo sería de 202 millones de dólares estadounidenses. En el caso de la acuicultura en aguas de interior, el valor económico directo sería de 777 millones de dólares. Además, los efectos económicos indirectos han afectado a otras industrias relacionadas. Por tanto, las políticas para proteger a las anguilas y promover el desarrollo de la acuicultura de ciclo completo son necesarias para que la industria de la anguila y las industrias relacionadas sean sostenibles. 淡水ウナギ養殖の衰退にもかかわらず、ウナギは今なお日本における重要な食料資源である。本稿では、仮想抽出法を用いて、ウナギ産業としての内水面漁業と内水面養殖業の経済的影響を分析する。結果は、内水面漁業が廃止された場合、直接的な経済価値は2億200万米ドルとなる。内水面養殖業の場合では、直接的な経済価値は7億7700万米ドルであった。さらに、間接的な経済効果は他の関連産業にも影響を与える。したがって、ウナギ産業とそれに関連する産業を維持するためには、ウナギを保護し、完全養殖の発展を促進する政策が必要であるといえる。
