Mapping regional strengths in a key enabling technology: The distribution of Internet of Things competences across European regions

Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) can trigger innovation processes across all sectors of the economy. However, this potential is not available to all regions. As with other enabling technologies, the competences required to develop IoT solutions are numerous and varied, ranging from hardware to software and related services, and are often provided by different companies. To map the application potential of these technologies across European regions, we use textual analysis to identify the NACE codes associated with five main IoT domains. We identify clusters of regions characterized by different mixes of competences in IoT technologies and we discuss the policy implications of our findings at both European and regional levels. El Internet de las Cosas (IdC) puede desencadenar procesos de innovación en todos los sectores de la economía. Sin embargo, este potencial no está al alcance de todas las regiones. Al igual que ocurre con otras tecnologías habilitadoras, las competencias necesarias para desarrollar soluciones del IdC son numerosas y variadas, desde el hardware hasta el software y los servicios relacionados, y a menudo son proporcionadas por diferentes empresas. Para definir el potencial de aplicación de estas tecnologías en las regiones europeas, se utilizó el análisis textual con el que identificar los códigos NACE asociados a cinco dominios principales del IdC. Se identificaron grupos de regiones caracterizadas por diferentes combinaciones de competencias en tecnologías del IdC y se discuten las implicaciones políticas de los hallazgos del estudio tanto a nivel europeo como regional. モノのインターネット(Internet of Things:IoT)は、経済のあらゆる分野においてイノベーションプロセスを引き起こす可能性がある。ただし、この可能性はすべての地域に当てはまるわけではない。他の実現技術と同様に、IoTソリューションの開発に必要な能力は、ハードウェアからソフトウェア、その他の関連サービスに至るまで多種多様であり、ほとんどの場合は複数の企業から提供される。これらの技術の適用可能性をヨーロッパ地域全体にマッピングするため、テキスト分析を用いて、IoTの主要な5つの領域に関連するNACEコードを特定する。IoT技術における能力のそれぞれの組み合わせによって特徴づけられる、地域のクラスタを特定し、欧州レベルと地域レベルの両方で今回の知見から得られる政策的インプリケーションを考察する。
