    Abstract

-- The paper analyses the interrelation between competition and welfare in private and social health insurance systems. Questions on providing, financing and reimbursing health care services in Germany and in an europeanwide setting are discussed. Social cohesion (“solidarity”) is defined on several levels and seen as a goal that is not damaged through more competition.
