Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the role of public capital, specially the role played by the different types of infrastructures and their territorial distribution in the productivity gains of the Spanish private sector. The analysis is carried out starting from an estimation of Spanish public capital endowments, elaborated, for the first time, by the Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Económicas and dissagregated functionally and territorially into the 17 Spanish regions. After a brief description of the Spanish public and private endowments and their relation to other OCDE countries as well as of the public capital stock structure, the capacity of public capital to explain productivity gains in the Spanish economy is analyzed, obtaining as a main result that the public capital stock structure is relevant for private productivity and that the infrastructures directly linked to the production process have a more significant and positive effect than the social ones.
