Bento de Jesus Caraça e a Integração Europeia

Abstract

Bento de Jesus Caraça was a prominent figure in the Portuguese society in the interwar and post-world war II period. His public intervention had a political dimension that embraces a doctrinal reflection on Europe, namely concerning the relations between Portugal and Europe, taking the latter as a cultural, not a political entity. In this context, he was a critic to the different projects of European integration, which came about in this period, including those designed by the left intellectual and political circles. Despite being a Marxists with great interpretative originality, his position on European integration topics stood close to Comintern’s.
