Rural poverty in El Salvador: dimensions, trends and causes

Abstract

Working paper on rural area poverty trends in El Salvador in the 1960s and 1970s - covers agricultural income of peasant farmers in relation to farm size and attributes its decline to underemployment, rural migration, decreased land ownership, land tenure changes, scarcity of agricultural credit and low income from nonfarm employment; shows how large scale commercial farming caused landlessness and decline in small farms; notes ineffectiveness of agrarian reforms in the 1980s.
