Abstract

The reasons for wars around the Gulf are numerous, both economic and religious. If the Middle East has become the world's center of conflict since the end of the Vietnam War, it has also been a much sought-after market for arms dealers. Indeed, arms production in the region is relatively low, which increases the potential for international arms transfers. The Gulf states are very active in the international arms markets, with four of them (Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt) being among the six largest importers in the world. The influx of arms into a very small area of the world does not bode well for an imminent return to peace.
