Abstract

Most methods of economic analysis (historical, qualitative and quantitative) have been used to analyse the economic and social consequences of disarmament. Military expenditure itself is not only dependent on political decisions but also on political constraints. The existence or not of a military-industrial complex or of alliances between great powers modifies the behaviour of states in the framework of an international disarmament procedure. There are several forms of disarmament, ranging from the destruction of weapons to the reduction of military expenditure, the prohibition of certain weapons (chemical, biological) or the control of arms transfers. In the context of an international disarmament decision for development, the question of calculating and comparing military expenditure becomes essential.
