Abstract

The question of the importance of an armaments industry is still the subject of national debate. France began rebuilding its armaments industry after the Second World War and strengthened it following the establishment of a national nuclear force and its withdrawal from the integrated military organisation of the Atlantic Alliance. In addition, the military sector also served to broaden the industrial base of the French economy. Overall, this industry has fulfilled its role, but today it needs exports to remain competitive in an international arms market with an overabundant supply, especially since the probable collapse of the Soviet Union. The economic crisis implies restructuring, which is likely to be painful.
