Abstract

[eng] Regional demographic growth : slightly reduced disparities - Between now and the year 2000, the West and the South-East will still be the regions to grow most rapidly. The South-East will continue to receive young people in search of employment and the retired attracted by « the good life ». The West will grow in function of its high birth rate. These two regions, however, are more affected than others by the general slowing of demographic growth and their lead is diminishing. At the other extreme, in the North-East and in the Île-de-France, demographic growth will be the lowest. In the Île-de-France, fewer young adults will arrive seeking work than in the past, while many adults around the age of 30 and the retired will continue to leave the region. In the North-East, numerous young people are leaving and will continue to leave the region. These departures, together with the drop in the birth rate that they entail, are slowing growth of the population.
