Abstract

L'objet de ce papier est de faire une présentation originale d'une institution culturelle par l'étude de la division du travail au sein d'une même profession : le journalisme. L'organisation du travail au sein d'un organe de presse se fonde en effet sur la répartition des tâches entre d'un côté les pigistes dans la sphère de l'indépendance et de l'autre, les titulaires appartenant à la sphère du salariat. Le bon fonctionnement d'un journal est donc assuré par un arbitrage entre division et coordination du travail parmi les acteurs en jeu. Stratégie des employeurs ou nécessité du métier, le recours aux pigistes témoigne de transformations nouvelles de la relation d'emploi pour les journalistes. La théorie de la segmentation de Piore et Doeringer se trouve alors renouvelée, en ce sens que les pigistes n'appartiennent strictement ni au marché secondaire, ni au marché primaire, mais constituent un marché paradoxal.
