Bildung und Lebenserwartung: Empirische Befunde für Deutschland und Europa

Abstract

Zahlreiche Studien belegen: Die Bildung einer Person hängt stark mit gesundheitsrelevanten Lebensweisen und der allgemeinen Gesundheit zusammen. Aber bedeutet dies auch, dass Personen mit höherer Bildung auch länger leben, und kann mehr Bildung ursächlich zu einem längeren Leben führen? Dieses DIW Roundup stellt den aktuellen Forschungsstand zum Zusammenhang zwischen Bildung und Lebenserwartung dar, insbesondere im deutschen und europäischen Kontext. Grundsätzlich lässt sich für Deutschland, aber auch europaweit, ein starker statistischer Zusammenhang nachweisen. Bislang liegen keine Befunde zur kausalen Wirkung von Bildung auf Lebenserwartung für Deutschland vor. Studien aus anderen Ländern Europas können den kausalen Zusammenhang nicht eindeutig belegen. Eine eingeschränkte Datenlage und umfangreiche Variationen im Studiendesign verdeutlichen weiteren Forschungsbedarf. Dabei könnten die Identifikation kausaler Effekte von Bildung auf Lebenserwartung, und die Untersuchung intergenerationaler Assoziationen zwischen Bildung und Lebenserwartung neue Erkenntnisse generieren.
