Geografía económica de la Orinoquia

Abstract

El objetivo de la presente investigación es estudiar la geografía económica de la región de la Orinoquia, así como su patrón espacial de asentamiento poblacional y uso del suelo. La Orinoquia es una extensa región al sureste de Colombia, que se extiende entre las estribaciones de la cordillera Oriental y la frontera con Venezuela. Para efectos prácticos de este estudio se tomaron los límites de los departamentos de Arauca, Casanare, Meta y Vichada, cuya extensión suma 255 mil kilómetros cuadrados, esto es, cerca de la cuarta parte del territorio colombiano. Tradicionalmente su economía giró en torno a la ganadería extensiva, pero en las últimas décadas, su modelo económico se amplió a la explotación de petróleo y al monocultivo de la palma de aceite principalmente. Ante la inminente disminución de los yacimientos petroleros, es recomendable que estos departamentos diversifiquen su economía, utilicen adecuadamente sus regalías y aumenten la eficiencia del gasto y del ahorro. Así mismo, se debe hacer un mayor esfuerzo fiscal en su jurisdicción, para mitigar el efecto de la caída en las regalías.
