Turismo y Desarrollo Económico: una Exploración Empírica

Abstract

El presente trabajo analiza la relación dinámica entre el turismo y el desarrollo económico en una muestra 123 países durante el periodo 1995-2019, mediante un análisis de series temporales simbólicas, utilizando como variable de medición del turismo el número de arribos de turistas internacionales por habitante y como variable de medición del desarrollo económico el Índice de Desarrollo Humano. Se utiliza la definición de régimen económico, y se introduce una noción de distancia entre las trayectorias dinámicas de los distintos países analizados para construir un árbol de expansión mínima, detectando grupos de países con comportamiento similar en términos de especialización turística y nivel de desarrollo. En general, existe poca movilidad de países entre los distintos regímenes durante el periodo temporal analizado, lo que parece denotar que son variables bastante estables, no observándose grandes cambios en el periodo analizado. Se identifican tres clústeres principales, siendo el más numeroso el integrado por países que están inmersos en una trampa de pobreza al tener bajo nivel de desarrollo y bajo nivel de especialización turística, mientras que la comparación cualitativa entre los clústeres parece denotar que los países que tienen alta especialización turística tienen un nivel de desarrollo superior al resto de países. Respecto al árbol de expansión mínima, se observan ciertos nodos centrales, siendo la estructura prácticamente lineal
