Abstract

In order to improve eggplant's resistance to Pseudomonas solanacearum, a breeding program was conducted using the two following ways: intraspecific and interspecific. The intraspecific way used the most resistant accessions issued from a far east germplasm. The better lines were crossed with the tropical U.S. variety «FLORIDA MARKET» and their progenies were selected using recurrent selection. After the first cycle the «RFM» families issued from this breeding procedure showed a good resistance forthe bacteria. The interspecific way used the african species S. aethiopicum as source of resistance. After the cross with S. melongena, a lot of sterilities problems were observed; however after two breeding cycles alterning back crossing with S. melongena phases and intercrossing phases, it was possible to obtain the «SAM»and «SAF» families. These families are also very resistant. All this breeding work was conducted under artificial inoculation conditions in order to obtain an homogeneous infestation. All the selected famillies can be used directly for growing or integrated in a new breeding program as sources of resistance.
