Rural Employment Trends in the EU

Abstract

The EU’s rural areas reflect the history, geography and politics of the Member States (MSs), as well as general patterns of socio-economic development. As a consequence, they display very considerable diversity and heterogeneity. Rural areas and their employment levels are generally more politically important in the EU than in the US, as reflected by the prominence of agricultural and rural policies in the EU. However, the patterns of rural development and employment do not suggest that the agri-food sector can be relied on as a major engine of rural development and employment in the EU. An evolutionary perspective of economic development strongly suggests that endogenous, locally induced and potentially self-sustaining growth is possible and capable of cultivation by appropriate policies and strategies.
