Abstract

This chapter introduces two types of medical insuranceMedical insurance schemes implemented in rural China covering rural residents with rural hukouHukou during the planned economyPlanned economy and market-oriented reformMarket-oriented reform periods. The Cooperative Medical SchemeCooperative Medical Scheme (CMS) was implemented in the 1960s and managed by people’s communePeople's commune, which was funded by people’s commune and rural residents. The New Rural Cooperative Medical SchemeNew Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme (NRCMS) was implemented in pilot rural regions in 2003 and gradually carried out in all rural areasRural areas, which was managed by the provincial-level government, and funded by central and local governments, collective villages, and rural residentsRural residents.
