Do Extrinsic Rewards Enhance Organizational Citizenship Behavior? A Study of Public Sector Organizations

Abstract

When Organ (1977) digged up the early notions of Barnard (1938) and Katz (1964) on extra-role behaviors in organizations this became the resurgence of an almost forgotten concept in organizational research. Organ’s (1988) organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) is probably the most popular concept in research on extra-role behaviors and an important topic in the field of Organizational Behavior (Organ/ Paine 1999; Podsakoff et al. 2000; Van Dyne et al. 1995). It is widely accepted that OCB fosters organizational effectiveness - indeed, it may be a key factor in stabilizing and ensuring organizational survival in times of uncertainty and rapid environmental change.
