Abstract

The gas industry was one of the most affected by the First World War. But the war period has not been in general an object of study in the analysis of the sector, usually focused on long-term performances or on case studies related to several aspects of the service (technology, capital, companies, etc. ). The main causes of the deterioration will be examined: 1. The shortage and high cost of coal; 2. The war recruitment of the workforce in the gas sector; 3. The damages caused to factories by the war. The most relevant was the lack of coal, the main input, which was scarce and more expensive. Gas was of poorer quality and a large number of factories were forced to temporarily or permanently stop their production. The increasing costs finally caused losses. This forced companies to claim higher tariffs from municipalities and governments, which triggered conflicts with consumers.
