The Value of Cultural Heritage

Abstract

Facing a windmill, one Dutchman will see an obstacle to progress that can be removed at small expense and another a heritage of Dutch culture that has to be saved at all expense. Such is the hallmark of modern life. Perspectives differ, values diverge. The value of cultural heritage is in the eye of the beholder. The question posed by this chapter is how economists are to behold the phenomenon.
