Abstract

Before we get drawn into a confusion of meanings, we need to consider the difference between happiness and wellbeing. Although the terms are often used in an interchangeable way, there are shades of difference between them. For our purposes, we would view ‘wellbeing’ as a state of contentment, if it’s not too obvious to say it, it is the state of ‘being well’, which is different from ‘being happy’. We think of ‘happiness’ as being closer to complete fulfilment, something we have all experienced, but by its nature is a transient state. We would go on to argue part of the feeling of being happy is the ability to compare one set of circumstances to another.
