More industrial revolutions

Abstract

The main argument of this chapter is that there is no economic miracle among the industrialising nations since the economies entering the modern economy had already satisfied a range of enabling conditions and neutralised disabling conditions. It tracks entry into the industrial phase across Europe, noting variations from an alleged British template of industrialisation, resulting from idiosyncratic differences in previous history, in environmental conditions and in geo-strategic positions. It refers in particular to the experience of France and of Germany. It considers the industrial surge in the USA which carried it to a position of economic and technological leadership. The chapter concludes by considering weaknesses in the capitalist market system and how the Soviet Union sought to provide an alternative set of policies and a different pathway to industrialisation, with a limited degree of success.
