Abstract

Das Buch plädiert dafür, den Befähigungsansatz (im Sinne von Amartya Sen) als Ressource für die sozialpolitische Reformagenda in Deutschland zu nutzen. Das Prinzip der Befähigungsgerechtigkeit ist eine produktive Orientierung, gerade in einem Land, das über ein umfangreich ausgebautes Bildungs- und Sozialsystem verfügt, aber deutlich unter seinen Möglichkeiten bleibt, Menschen zu unterstützen, ihre Potentiale zu entfalten. Gegen den Befähigungsansatz wirken in der deutschen Sozialstaatsdebatte Vorbehalte, er sei individualistisch und betone Eigenverantwortung statt Solidarität. Eine Bildungs- und Sozialpolitik, die sich als Politik der Befähigung begreift und Verwirklichungschancen erweitert, erweitert notwendigerweise zugleich den Raum für Eigenverantwortung und Selbstsorge. Dies steht nicht in Widerspruch zu Solidarität.
