Abstract

Dem Arbeitsmarkt kam im Wirtschaftsgeschehen stets eine zentrale Position zu. Industrielle Produktion wurde erst möglich, wenn – entsprechend qualifizierte – Arbeitskräfte zur Verfügung standen; andererseits waren die Einkommen eines großen Teils der erwerbsfähigen Bevölkerung von ausreichenden Arbeitsmöglichkeiten abhängig. Diese Ambivalenz durchzieht in verschiedener Form die ganze Geschichte der Industriegesellschaft. Die Bedeutung dieses Themas bewirkte, daß sich zahllose ökonomische Studien Problemen des Arbeitsmarktes zuwandten; was freilich kaum existiert, ist ein Versuch, die Entwicklung dieses Marktes vom Beginn der Industrialisierung bis zur Gegenwart für ein Land nachzuzeichnen. Die vorliegende Studie unternimmt diesen Versuch für Österreich.
