This empirical dissertation is subdivided in three topics which in each case deal with specific questions of the German movie business. The first and most important part of the work is dedicated to analyse potential drivers for a movies economic success which is measured in admission numbers and rentability. A special focus lies on the analysis of stars such as actors, producers and directors with ex ante popularity. In addition further quality signals like critical reviews and the level of awareness (e. g. movie is based on a novel, sequel, remake, etc.) are used to determine the success at the box office and a movies rentability. Topic 2 deals with determining cultural or artistic success drivers of German movies. For describing the artistic success of a movie the analysis uses nominations and prices of the “Deutsche Filmpreis” and valuations of the “Filmbewertungsstelle Wiesbaden”. Topic 3 extends the analysis on determining success drivers of German movies in the international markets, using the example of the US-American sales market. In particular the topic focuses the impact of a movies success in Germany on the box office performance in the United States. In addition to theory based remarks all analyses are performed by means of different types of regression analysis.
