Abstract

"Interesado en explorar las posibilidades de comercio con Colombia, el Departamento de Comercio envía al señor P. L. Bell a estudiar el estado de la agricultura, la industria, la minería y el comercio de Colombia. Da la impresión que estuvo en el país en 1918 y 1919, y el informe se publica en 1921. El "manual" de Bell es una combinación de geografía económica, historia económica y análisis de los sectores y las regiones con mayor potencial de desarrollo en los siguientes años. Lo sorprendente del trabajo es su detalle, fenómeno que lo hace muy útil para el historiador económico. Divide el país en nueve zonas económicas y describe la actividad productiva en cada una de ellas: tamaño del hato ganadero, productos sembrados y hectáreas por cultivo, población, principales industrias, bancos, comercio exterior y salarios más frecuentes de diferentes ocupaciones. Un buen proyecto de historia económica sería utilizar todos estos datos para armar unas cuentas nacionales de 1918-1919."
