Abstract

This article describes the current system of public transport associations and ticket revenue allocation in Germany. The system has been subject to public criticism for its administrative cost and complex regulations. The new nationwide 49 euro flat rate ticket planned to start in May 2023 will require significant changes to this system. The article details the challenges and discusses ideas to reform the system.
