Abstract

This study aimed to determine the degree of concentration of the international rice market. The following variables were used: (a) Amount of rice exported by country, and (b) Amount of rice imported by country. The following concentration indices were determined: (a) concentration ratio CR (k); (b) concentration quarters; and (c) Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI). In addition, countries were grouped in clusters of exporters and importers, considering the quantities exported / imported in 2012. The results show that the international market for rice is of low concentration, but with a tendency to increase its density. Rice exports are more concentrated in a few countries than imports. The largest exporters are in Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, India and Pakistan) and the United States of America. The main importers are in Asia (China, Indonesia and the Philippines), Africa (Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Senegal and South Africa) and the Middle East (Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Iran).
