Comprehensive Evaluation Research on Healthcare Development in China from 2002 to 2014

Abstract

This paper aims to establish a comprehensive evaluation system and to appraise healthcare development in China from 2002 to 2014. Statistical data of healthcare development from 2002 to 2014 were collected from China Health Statistical Yearbook. Selected evaluation indicators were used according to theories related to healthcare management and comprehensive evaluation. The evaluation system was constructed through principal component analysis (PCA) of time series. A hierarchical cluster analysis on 31 provinces was carried out for the classification. A total of four principal components were extracted through PCA. The 31 provinces were divided into six categories through hierarchical cluster analysis. Consequently, healthcare achieved a stable development in China from 2002 to 2014. The Healthcare Input Index, Healthcare Process Index, Healthcare Fairness Index, and Comprehensive Healthcare Development Index all increased at a stable rate, and the Public Health Service Index first declined and then increased. Generally, China’s healthcare development presented a distribution pattern which was observed to be high in Eastern China and low in the west, with a great gap among different provinces. The accumulated growth rate of healthcare in Middle and Western China was higher than that in Eastern China, whereas the regional gap of healthcare development decreased gradually. Healthcare is well developed in China but a significant regional gap and lack of fairness still exist. Thus, the central financial institution should increase inputs and support healthcare in less developed regions.
