Youth Unemployment in Romania: a problem that needs to be solved

Youth unemployment is a problem that affects all EU countries, and the economy is losing young talents, the phenomenon is not to be ignored or addressed with ineffective and sporadic policy measures. The paper aims to describe Romanian youth unemployment in comparison with other EU countries, looking at causes shaping the trends and economic landscape and growth perspective additionally exploring the labour market characteristics and evolution. The descriptive statistics are used to present the scenery and the research can be defined as exploratory research of which results are used to make policy recommendationsuseful to tackle the causes of youth unemployment offering solutions through education and supportive measures. National and EU statistical data have been used to describe the global, regional, and national trends of youth unemployment and labour market perspectives. The research results seen as policy recommendations are valuable for governmental institutions addressing youth issues and also to NGOshaving interests in supporting the young generation in the transition to the labour market. Youth unemployment seems to be a problem not because of job sacristy but mainly because of the lack of skills and competencies required today by employers. The paper examines the shifts registered in the jobs landscape: some job categories will decline, while others will register a visible growth and youth needs to be encouraged to explore new paths of skills formation and to be open to new training opportunities offered by formal and non-formal education.
