Abstract

ABSTRACT: The paper analyzes the characteristics of the canary financing system, justified on the status of outermost region of the European Union. We examine the general framework of public finances, putting it in relation to the macroeconomic dynamics of the Canary Islands. We conclude that the available estimates do not appear sufficient to specify the total amount of compensation that should be enjoyed by the condition of outermost region. Neither seems to be a direct correspondence between the tax benefits and their effectiveness in terms of economic development, let alone during the last decade. From this we conclude the need to rethink the status quo.
