Mercado y virtud o cómo complicar la economía. A propósito de Las pasiones y los intereses, de Albert Hirschman

Abstract

Este artículo comenta algunas de las ideas sobre los orígenes intelectuales del capitalismo que Albert Hirschman expone en Las pasiones y los intereses. Montesquieu, James Steuart y Adam Smith consideraron el interés como un tipo de pasión benévola que podía dominar o mantener a raya las pasiones malvadas, como la violencia o el despotismo de los gobernantes. Los vínculos entre el comercio –y el ánimo de lucro que hoy lo impulsa– y el progreso de la civilización no eran para ellos una ley natural, y tampoco eran indiscutibles, como ahora se suele pensar.
