Italy’s Southern and National Issues. Is Southern Italy a Dead Issue?

Abstract

The North-South problem is far from settled, and it is high time to look into the reasons why this dualism shows such extraordinary persistence. No longer having devaluation to fall back on, years have been wasted in the unsuccessful attempt to exorcise the spectre of decline with rhetoric about the northern issue and federalism. To get development moving again Southern Italy must be dislodged from the marginal role it has been relegated to and a halt brought to the mass emigration of its most highly educated young - a "demographic tsunami" that would consign the South to assistance, solving the problem with euthanasia, and with consequences that call to mind Mazzini’s famous prophecy. Starting out once again from this great region of Europe, now as in the 1950s, is a mandatory condition to get through this over-protracted crisis.
