Abstract

In the debate on the crisis of the Italian economy, the work of Paolo Sylos Labini fills an important gap, devising a thorough theory of economic development that draws on the theoretical foundations of classical political economy, with close attention to the dynamics of technical progress and its impact on structural economic change. Technological discontinuities that characterize the oligopolistic structure of modern industrial economies are at the core of Sylos LabiniÕs reasoning, as they affect the dynamics of labor productivity and the extent to which it contributes to variations in production and employment. Since the end of the Ô50s the Italian crisis has structured around productive, territorial, and social imbalances, leading the country to accumulate growing technology gaps and lag behind major industrialized economies. In SylosÕ view, this calls for a renewed and more complex type of Keynesian intervention, with a clear commitment to actions and investments that are able to enhance the countryÕs research and innovation capacity.
