Abstract

[eng] Practice and meaning of subcontracting in car industry in France. . The concrete survey of the nature of the technical and economical relations that become entangled in a sector, the car industry, shows ont behind an unifying notion, « subcontracting », a very strong and agressive logic, the one of « order-givers » and a wide range of positions of subcontractors faced with their partners. The effort for mastering the whole process of production, and merchandizing, carried ouf by the car manufacturers leads them unto a sectorial management of the production system in which subcontractors are integrated or integrable units. Putting aside the notions of « competing » or « complementary » subcontracting, the author proposes a reading code of the situations of subcontractors according to their degree of involvement in the car production system and of their. ability to master the technique, the production and the market. He points out the lack of structural continuity and of transfer from .one category into another. At last this research opens up the field to reelections on the rearrangement of the social relations of production in an industrially developped society.
