La modernisation agricole entreprise depuis le milieu des années soixante en France s'est consolidée autour de l'agriculture familiale; ainsi, on réfute l'idée que la famille constitue un obstacle au progrès technique et à la reconversion. Nous faisons l'hypothèse du rôle fondamental des structures familiales qui se sont adaptées aux nouvelles conditions de production, aux contraintes institutionnelles, pédoclimatiques et socio-économiques. Cet article présente les principales lignes de force qui ont marqué l'évolution des rapports de l'agriculture avec la famille.
