Abstract

[eng] One Firm in Two Disappears within Five Years of its Creation - From 1979 to 1987, the productive infrastructure renewed itself quickly. The 1979-1982 period was propitious to the establishment of firms. Between 1982 and 1984, there were more closures than creations of businesses. Except in the sector of service industries, an increasing number of firms closed down, and this went on until after 1985. . The mortality rate of firms was high in the first years of their lives, particularly in the first two ones : about 30 % of the firms ceased to exist before they were two years old. This mortality rate was higher both for individual firms than for companies, and in trade than in industries and service industries. It was more risky to start one's own business than to take one over, and, on the average, the lifespan of firms created from scratch was shorter than that of firms which had been established out of an existing business.
