Abstract

The article analyses the structural basis of Luigi Einaudi’s federalist views focussing on two essays written by Einaudi respectively in 1943 and 1944: Per una federazione economica europea [Contribution to an European economic federation], and I problemi economici della federazione europea [The economic problems of the European federation]. The first essay contains Einaudi’s critique to the theory of vital spaces, based on an undue interpretation of the theory of increasing returns to scale. The second contribution reveals Einaudi’s idea that the optimal dimension of State agency in favour of economic development is that of a worldwide government. The European Union is only a means to this end, which preserves common ideals of civilisation, culture and religion.
