Using system dynamics to model the impact of policing activity on performance

Abstract

This practical case study describes how West Yorkshire Police have employed system dynamics modelling to gain a better understanding of the high-level interrelationships between policing activity and performance outcomes to improve service management and decision-making. The study describes how the model evolved and identifies some strengths and weaknesses of the approach taken. It proposes a targeted approach to further model development, focusing on policing activity where partners are jointly responsible for service outcomes.
