An evaluation of essential revenue management competencies: similarities and differences between practitioners and educators

Abstract

This study explores the importance of revenue management (RM) competencies and identifies specific RM competencies that are consistently ranked as important in practice and in formalized university curriculum. The data from 195 surveys were analyzed revealing significant differences in what practitioners and educators deem to be the most essential competencies in the area of revenue management. On surveying hotel managers at several levels within various departments, as well as professors at a number of levels and terms, this research identifies a potential critical gap in what academicians are producing and what practitioners are utilizing in the area of revenue management.
