Verstärkt Teilzeitarbeit die Geschlechterungleichheit auf dem Arbeitsmarkt?

Abstract

The incidence of part-time work in Switzerland is very high, particularly among women. Many people see this as an advantage of the Swiss labor market. However, even though part-time work facilitates the reconciliation of work and family duties and therefore promotes the integration of women in the labor market, the high incidence of part-time work among women has its downsides too. This analysis shows that part-time work in Switzerland is a career obstacle and hence contributes to the perpetuation of gender inequalities in the labor market. The most important reason why women work part-time is child-care. As soon as there are children in the household, women reduce their work volume, whereas that of men stays stable. Better and cheaper child-care facilities as well as more part-time jobs on the management level for women and men might reduce the problem.
