Letter to the Editor---Airline Overbooking: Fresh Approaches are Needed

Abstract

This note, motivated by the paper of Shlifer and Vardi, is an attempt to set the problem of airline overbooking in proper perspective and to show why most of the operations research already carried out in regard to this problem may now be misdirected.
