Abstract

We introduce a new statistic for evaluating offensive performance in baseball: the offensive performance average (OPA). The OPA is based on the increase in expected runs caused by the batter and includes the contributions of his stolen bases. This paper also discusses some other averages used for offensive evaluations and ranks the averages by means of correlation coefficients using team data for 1965–1975. Some variations on the OPA are given and the OPA is used to provide a list of the ten best major-league offensive players of all time.
