Abstract

In supervising student projects with local enterprises in Shanghai, the author found that the foci of the projects were, for the most part, to study an operation and to determine how to improve it. In this respect the projects were no different from those in the West. But the projects did differ in terms of objectives and constraints, and because computing technology was less available. Three projects illustrate the types of studies conducted.
