Abstract

Biometric systems have always been regarded with a certain degree of skepticism, due to the characteristics of unicity and universality of the human biometric traits. These two aspects can lead to the total compromising of a user identity within such a system, in case of a stolen or counterfeit biometric template. For this reason, common efforts of Biometry and Cryptography gave rise to the Bio-cryptography domain. Among the most important advantages conferred by bio-cryptographic systems belong the elimination of the need for storing user biometric templates within the system, as well as the flexibility of resulted bio-cryptograms, which can be revoked or substituted at any moment, without introducing any security breaches. These aspects confer bio-cryptographic systems a higher degree of resistance against certain types of attacks, to whom classical biometric systems are vulnerable.
