Democracy and the capitalist crisis: the case of Greece

Author

  • Costas Panayotakis

Abstract

The current economic crisis has revealed the tensions between capitalism and democracy and the extent to which the structural power relations of the former undermine the meaningfulness of democratic political institutions. This article explores these tensions by focusing on Greece and on the delegitimising impact that the current crisis and the austerity package supervised by the International Monetary Fund, European Union and the European Central Bank have had on the Greek political system.
