The energy renovation journey

Abstract

The reduction of energy use in existing buildings through energy renovations is required to reach the energy efficiency goals in Denmark. To facilitate the adoption of technologies for extensive energy renovations, there is a need to understand how these take place and what influences the process. In this paper, we open the 'black box' of what actually happens when actors engage in the adoption of energy renovation technologies and the necessity of trust between the actors. In the case study of an energy renovation project of hotel facilities, we analyse the journey from having the intention to implement extensive energy renovation measures to actually implementing a solution. For extensive energy renovations, the process is not associated with a radical technological development. It is complex owing to the number of actors involved and the complexity in the socio-technical interactions between them.
