Abstract

The international beef market tends to be led by firms that internally control the most relevant nodes of the value chain to transform them into networks of value in which the consumer acquires a predominant role in the definition of the product offering. This article discusses global trends in production and consumption of beef in the first decade of the 21st century. The trends are explained by innovation in the business model of Latino businesses, subsequent to the outbreak of bovine encephalopathy spongiform (BSE), which caused crisis to American exports, in 2003. We identify changes and trends in the value network and get lessons in strategy in management of the agricultural sector. Using the case study methodology, the paper identifies and compares strategies of two companies in the market of beef and veal: the company that boasts world leadership (JBS- Friboi), and the company which leads the domestic market and Mexican exports (Su Karne).
