Abstract

This article presents an approach to the complex, diverse and dynamic educational reality in the Basque Country. With investment and social, political and educational commitment it has been possible to build a bilingual education system characterized by indicators of excellence and high graduation and qualification rates in the different educational stages. However, 40 years after the assumption of educational competencies, a deep and peaceful reflection is necessary that allows us to rethink some relevant dilemmas and current challenges, but also those that are common to the education of the future in the knowledge society. Throughout the article, after analysing the scientific literature on this field, as well as official evaluation reports, some reflections are raised about some essential challenges such as the crossroads to responding to local/global social needs and, at the same time, responding to the requirements of external evaluations or of prioritizing an excellence curriculum according to current standards or an inclusive and comprehensive education system..
