Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the factors that explain educational choices among young people from 16–19 years old, including those in general and vocational upper-secondary education (ISCED 3). Adopting a multifactorial systemic approach that draws on social cognitive theory on Career, and in line with the findings of related research, it conducts a study of the variables that influence educational and vocational training choices among young people in Spain. To this end, exploratory research was conducted in the form of a survey of over 10,000 young people. Its findings suggest that the most decisive factors are individual (pedagogical/academic) and social (sociodemographic), which lays down the challenge of improving guidance, system efficiency and socioeconomic support. The contribution this research makes to the field lies in its novel approach and in the quantitative scale of the sample. Nevertheless, it is necessary to continue study in this significant scientific field due to the prescriptive influence it exerts on the future of our young people.
